Why Do You Need Dishwasher Salt?

Most dishwashers have a built-in water softener unit that removes the minerals (calcium and magnesium) from hard water before it enters the wash cycle. This water softener uses ion exchange resin that needs to be regularly regenerated using coarse-grain dishwasher salt.
